Matthew 6:33

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”  Matthew 6:33

1. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;”
We SEEK something when it is lost. From Christ’s point of view, God’s kingdom and righteousness were not present in the hearts of his disciples, means it is not their priority. Hence the command is to SEEK. Before we seek other things God wants us to seek FIRST His kingdom and righteousness. Christ is stressing the importance of SEEKING it FIRST as his introductory statement.

Here, there are two things Christ wants us to seek first; kingdom of God, and his righteousness. God’s kingdom is all about sharing the good news of salvation to the world. It means doing things to expand his  church and ministry to save souls. As part of  God’s family we should take part of this “family business”. Making every effort to seek something that would help to expand his kingdom. While his righteousness means doing things in accordance to God’s standard of what is right. As Christians we have to set aside our own standard of righteousness in exchange to God’s standard of righteousness. Because God’s standard of righteousness is consistent, perfect and eternal.

2. “and all these things shall be added unto you.”
These are all about the clothes, food and shelter mentioned in the preceding verses. Jesus promise us that God will provide all our needs if we make God’s kingdom and righteousness our primary concern. It means that we don’t have to worry about our life. While pagans worry about these things, we as Christians should not. As long that we live according to his righteousness and serving God’s kingdom. God will take care of the things we need. In the preceding verses Christ used the birds of the air, and flowers of the field as his examples of how the heavenly Father take care of these things even though they don’t work. How much more to us, his children!

Conclusion:
Our responsibility is to seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness.
God’s responsibility is to provide everything we need for life.
